RAM usage and missing icons

I realize that we are all fairly new to Vista and thus these questions are
more difficult to find answers for at this time. Nevertheless I have a
question about the "Memory" display in Vista's Task Manager. When I bootup
the system and after it settles down, the Memory section shows about 465-525
megs of RAM. As I progress throughout the day, this figure increases
constantly. What is bothering me is that the amount shown doesn't return to
even close to the original at bootup even if I close down all running
applications.

For example, I've been on the system for about 5 hours now doing various
things, e.g., browsing through some photos in the Photo Gallery, searching
for items online, visiting various forums, etc. With no applications open
the Memory item has risen to 1.1 gigs. I am experiencing no negative
side-effects from this as my system has 2 gigs of RAM installed. But is what
I am experiencing typical of others running Vista?

A second issue I'm having is with missing icons in two areas: 1) In Windows
Photo Gallery when I click on "Videos" on the left, the video icons are the
default Windows video icon and not a preview of the actual video which I had
when running RC2. 2) In any of the "Help" dialogs where there is a link to
open an application or utility, the accompanying icon on the left is the old
red-x place marker icon. Can someone recommend a fix for this problem?

I'm running Vista Ultimate (upgrade over Win XP Home SP-2). Everything else
appears to be working 100%.

Looks like a memory leak, but I have no idea why. Mine goes way down after
inactivity

On the icons, uncheck Always Show icons, never thumbnails, in Folder
Options>View

I have been up for about 6 hours this trip. I have 2 gig of RAM installed.
My "free" RAM shows as 4 meg. My cached RAM (that is where free RAM is put
to use) shows as 1.4 gig. Don't worry so much about RAM usage unless you are
getting a lock up condition. Vista handles RAM differently that XP did. In
XP I would show as 1.4 gig of unused RAM.

Vista just puts it to use. XP did not.
