No, it wouldn't be a file, but it does sound like either it's not the
right RAM for your system, it's not set properly in the unnamed BIOS you
have, they have to be installed in pairs, it's improperly installed, or
it's a defective chipset, among other possibilities. Installing "per
requirements" really says very little.

If you want a quick confirmation of what type/speed/footprint/etc. you
need, try crucial.com; they seem to be very good at it. Not just any 1
Gig stick will work.

Thanks I have a gateway laptop and it only has room for one stick. I went on
gateway.com to make sure i got the correct mem stick and got a name brand one
but I plugged it in and windows didnt boot up?

Thanks, i cant even get windows to come on at all. I got on gateway.com to
see what mem chip they recomend for my laptop and i got that. I installed it
an nothing? the computer wont even boot up?

What is the model and model number of the laptop? What are the specs of
your RAM stick?

Are you *absolutely* sure you placed the module in completely?

I would get a second opinion. I agree with Twayne. Go to
http://www.crucial.com/ and see what they have to say.

Up to you; there's a way to check it out and you have it. Many
reasons/possibilities.

If you're not going to take any of hte advice you've been given, at
least 3 pretty decent suggestions, then you should quit asking or ask
what you REALLY mean!

You were given the details in one of the first responses as to how to test
your ram.
If you read the link you will have seen you dont boot win to run the test,
but its run from a bootable floppy or cd
Either run the test & report back the findings or take your PC to a real
repair shop

You don't need Windows to run MemTest86+
You do need to download the software and then create a bootable Floppy or
CD.

Set your BIOS for the Floppy disk or CD as your first boot device.
Exit and Save BIOS settings.
Insert Floppy or CD and reboot.
