i have upgraded the ram of my windows 2000 server from 512
mb to 2 gb?
during system boot-up the upgraded ram is shown but when
windows 2000 starts it gives 'hardware malfunction' error.
what can be the problem?

This can be due to slightly mismatched RAM cards. W2k is very demanding
in this regard; mismatches of timing/latency characteristics can bother
W2k, which is more sensitive than BIOS RAM tests in general.

You might try removing the old RAM card(s) to see if that satisfies W2k.
Try various combinations of cards in different slots, etc, making sure
all cards are seated well - and that the RAM config follows any rules
you'll find in the motherboard manual. Even new cards from different
batches or different manufacturers, all supposedly with the same specs,
can cause such problems. Distance from a particular RAM slot to CPU
matters, too. Tolerances are extremely tight, and pulses travel only
about an inch per nanosecond on a good day.

i have installed 1 gb ram now. but the server is not
booting up.
it is showing the starting w2k server family and thats it
even in safe mode it is not starting

You have 4 RAM sticks? Try them one at a time. Then try the good ones 2
at a time. And so on.

If you made ANY other software/hardware changes at the time you inserted
the new RAM sticks, give complete details.

The more info you provide, the more likely someone will post a real
solution. With little info, answers are mere speculation.
