So, how do I tell if RAM is broken or not?
Like I said, I bought some RAM for my PC from eBay, and it doesn't work
in my PC. Before I try reselling it on eBay, I want to make sure it
isn't busted. Any ideas?
1. Keep hitting the reset button until you get some kind of boot? With
some computers, holding down the INSert key while doing this will cause
the safe default settings to be chosen.
2. Try other BIOS settings, using another memory module to configure
the computer? Sometimes the defaults are wrong for the particular type
of memory. For example, my older mobo made for PC2100 memory won't
boot at its default settings if a PC3200 module is in it.
3. Try other computers, preferrably those with different types or
brands of chipsets?
4. Use a memory testing machine at a computer shop?
If you can get the memory to work, run CPU-Z to see what memory timings
worked (eBay buyers may want to know them), and test it with the
diagnostics from
www.memtest86.com (MemTest86) or
www.memtest86.org
(MemTest86+) and also from
www.goldmemory.cz. I've had some modules
pass one of these but fail the other, so I always test with Gold Memory
and one of the others. OTOH DocMem isn't very good at all. See:
