HP PC has 2 slots for DDR PC3200 400mhz modules. Current configuration is
one 256k chip. I have ordered a 1GB module. Can I install the 1GB into 1
slot and the 256k in the remaining slot? Or is it better to just install the
new 1GB only? PC is an old HP Pavilion a705w with a Celeron CPU. I think it
is around 333mhz or something. PC belongs to a friend and I'm just trying to
speed it up a bit without too much expense. There is a lot of memory
swapping just deleting a program. Thanks, Steve T.

According to Crucial memory web site the PC has two slots, with up to 1GB
memory per slot.
So both memory sticks should work but I would start out by removing the
256MB stick
and insert just the 1GB stick.

If the PC boots up and runs OK then after a week or 2 you might consider
adding back
the 256MB stick although it not going to make much if any difference in
speed.

Also according to reviews it has a 2.93Ghz Celeron.

The disk drive is only 40GB so if it's nearly full a good house cleaning
(using Windows 'Disk Cleanup' tool) would be in order.

Chipset is 845GV. Which suggests a single channel design. The sticks
can be run singly or together. There is no incentive to match them.

Only thing I'd watch for, is the kind of 1GB DDR module being purchased.
For example, Ebay is awash in "high density" 1GB DDR modules. Reputable
sellers (if you can call them that), put a list of restricted chipsets
that will work with that kind of RAM. It doesn't work with everything,
and is usually explicitly listed in Intel chipset datasheets as not
compatible. (Intel lists support for x8 or x16 chips, but not for
x4 chips on desktops using unbuffered RAM.) Consequently, I'd check to
see what the claim is, before ordering.

If you have a URL for the RAM, someone can look at it.

The RAM module is a Kingston ordered from TigerDirect. Value Ram and is
noted as being compatible with
400mhz (PC3200)
333mhz (PC2700)
266mhz (PC2100).
I obtained the required specs from HP's website and matched it up at Tiger.
Model number on the module is KVR400/1GR.

Since it isn't coming from Ebay, your odds improve :-)

Reviews look good.

The datasheet for the product is supposed to be here, but the file is missing.

Should work fine.

Installed the module and all went fine. Owner could not believe the
improvement. I also blew the case out with compressed air prior to
installing. A virtual dust bowl. After decrapifying the PC and installing an
AV program (AVG free), I re-installed the original 256k module and CCleaner
recognized it too. Works like a charm. Thanks for the input, Steve T.

Why ask HERE? This has nothing to do with the XP OS.

Ask elsewhere

Why do you bother wasting everybody's time with your worthless posts

YOU are wrong. What memory configuration the mainboard requires has
absolutely NOTHING to do with the OS. As it has NOTHING to do with
the OS, it does not belong in a group that deals with the hardware AND
the OS interaction with it.

Now go away or I shall be forced to taunt you a second time.
