RAM problem..help please....

Not sure if this is the right place but a little help, please. Newbie here.

My motherboard is a ECS P4VMM2 v8.1c and I have a 256 memory PC2700. I want
to upgrade it and add another 256 RAM but as I look at the manual of my
motherboard the specs only allows until PC2100 although upto 1 G of RAM.
Would it be okay if I still buy a PC2700 256 memory to add to my existing RAM?

I am new to this so I wasnt aware that I was using a RAM that has a higher
spec that the motherboard was intended.

Buying and/or using faster RAM than indicated in the motherboard manual
means that the RAM will only run at the speed limit set by the motherboard;
in your case the PC2700 RAM will only run at PC2100 speed. It will not hurt
anything if you buy anoither PC2700 - just make sure it is exactly the same
as the one presently installed.

And I mean exactly: manufacturer, number of chips,type of chips, etc.

Also, some memory sellers will buy old memory so why not remove the 256 and
buy one 512 - you might end up not payig that much; memory is pretty cheap.

Generally speaking using higher spec RAM will not cause a problem. The
RAM, however, will perform at the lower rating. So in your case your
PC2700 is performing as if it were PC2100, as that is all the
motherboard can handle.

This is additional query from a newbie. I am wondering what's the
difference between PC2700 vs. PC2100 (or PC 1600) if I use the same 256 MB
memeory chip. My MB can use PC2700, PC2100, and PC1600. I am wondering.

Speed. The higher numbers indicate faster access speeds.
So if your machine supports PC1600, PC2100, and PC2700 then it will
run faster, probably quite noticeably faster, with PC2700 RAM modules
than it will with PC1600 modules.
