RAM or mobo problems?

I upgraded my PC to a A7V600 mb and a AMD XP 2200+. The PC does not boot up
properly, a few seconds after hitting the power switch you can hear the CPU
fan dying for a few seconds, then it picks up again. When I go into BIOS it
freezes up after a while. And when I actually get past booting and trying to
install OS, it freezes up as it is trying to copy the install files. I am
running a Crucial 256M DDR PC2100 memory stick, it has been working ok in my
other PC. a Enlight 420W PSU, a brand new 80Gb Seagate HDD. Basically only
thing I haven't tried to swap out yet is the memory stick. Can it cause
these type of problems even if it works ok in my other PC, a A7A266 with
Athlon 1.2. Please help me, getting frustrated....

Have you swapped the power supply? I would suspect it first, then the board with the
symptoms you have. Before condemning the board though, remove and unplug everything expect
the power connector to the motherboard, the keyboard, and the video card (Memory and CPU
will also be needed). Is the memory the correct speed for the board and CPU?

I had problems similar to your's, and I thought it was either the mobo
or the memory, but it ended up being the CPU that was busted. So check
and make sure that the CPU itself works.

Yup, already replaced the PSU to a Enlight 420W, the CPU has been running in
my other PC with no problems. I have disconnected everything that is not
needed to run it in basic mode. CD-rom is gone and all cards, except video
of course. The memory is a Crucial 256 M PC 2100, according to manual this
mobo should take PC2100/2700/3200 DDR memory. The Crucial stick has been in
my other PC for a year with no problems. And yes, it does beep.

You might find that it's trying to run the CPU FSB at 133MHz, but the
memory at 166MHz. of course this is potentially problematic with
PC2100 memory being rated to only 133MHz. I suggest seeing if you can
jumper the board for 100MHz FSB to get the system to POST, then going
into the BIOS and manually setting the memory to same speed as the
FSB, if there isn't a jumper to do that too.

Of course it would be helpful if you could get your hands on another
memory module too, you'd likely benefit from adding another 256MB
anyway so now might be a good time to buy 256MB of PC2700, then try
the board with only the new memory, first.

Is PC2100 the correct memory speed for the CPU? You say both the CPU and memory "were in
your other PC", but if they weren't both in the same "other PC", the speeds may or may not
match. Do you have the 2nd power cord to the motherboard connected? Are all jumpers set to
spec (no over-clocking while trying to trouble shoot)? Do you have another video card you
can try, perhaps pull one out of another computer temporarily (even an older PCI video
card should work for testing)?

The XP2200+ runs on a FSB of 133MHz, the same speed that PC2100 DDR memory
is rated for.
