I am in the process of building a computer, and one of my friends says WIN XP will only use 512 Mb RAM, so putting more in if I use WIN XP would be pointless. Can anyone point me in the right direction to validate/discredit this? Email @yahoo.com

For most people, doing normal business apps or home-office
stuff, 512Mg of RAM is fine. If you're doing video
editing or fluid dynamics or nuclear simulations or Big
Bang modeling, more is better . . .

Good Luck !

Your friend is very much wrong. The correct number is 4GB.

Whether *you* can make effective use of more than 512MB is
another matter. It depends on what apps you run, but for most
people running a common mix of business apps, 512MB is sufficient
and any more is likely to provide no extra benefit.

On the other hand, if you do things like edit large photographic
images, more than 512MB--even *much* more--can be very
beneficial.

Your friend is confusing XP with an issue that was present in some older
versions of Windows. And, as long as the motherboard supported the higher
amounts of RAM, it was possible to workaround that issue.

Pure nonsense. Even W98 will allow more than that. The real limitation is in
the design of your motherboard. Check your motherboard specs by looking in
your User Guide if you have one, or going to the website of your computer or
the motherboard.
