Ok, right now I have an Everex Explora RS2800 system, it has 256mb of
memory, 64 of it however is shared with the on board video. I just bought a
256mb stick to slap in this machine and a 16mb external video card, should I
see an improvement in this system? I dont really use it to play games that
require a lot of video memory so I just bought a 16mb card.

Assuming that you bought the correct RAM for your system, yes you will
see an improvement. Also see these links for slow computer issues:

So according to these aritcles, saying use components that are approximately
comtemporary to each other. I would be better off using the onboard video
card with the 64 mb shared memory rather than the 16mb one.
