How much RAM is recommended for XP Pro?
I have 512M and it swaps a lot.
Maybe it suspends running programs to disk until I need them again?

512MB to 1GB - depending on what you do. SOme people use up to 4GB, but
they likely do a lot of video editing or something else that would actually
use that much RAM.
 
1 GB is OK for normal users - well, the speed depends on the type of RAM
that your hardware supports, CPU, setup etc.
Check in Windows Task Manager/Performance/Physical Memory/Available how much
RAM your programs use; if available RAM is under (arguably) 5% of installed
RAM, you need more. Of course, RAM usage varies w/ the type and number of
programs running.
