RAID1 on SiI3112 controller (A7N8X mobo)

I'm about to make a RAID1 array on two 250GB disks on the SiI3112
controller (A7N8X mobo). I'd like to know - if one of the disks has a
problem, or starts getting corrupted etc., how does the computer let you
know? Does it only detects problems at boot time, somehow, or will it
let you know immediately if there are problems? (e.g. failed write?)
Or is it completely up to me make sure the disks aren't having any problems?

You see, my worry is that if I am not informed of disk integrity
problems, both disks could start going into decline without me knowing a
thing....

The raid utility supplied with mobo raid drivers gave no notification when I
had a problem. The first I realised was when a particular app.started
playing up. I had to break the raid and run the hd manu. disk checking
utility on it.This reported problems with one hd. I was able to immediately
boot with the single disk, unfortunately 3 months data was missing -
theoretically impossible - Asus admitted that there had been problems with
an early bios but they werent aware of anything current.
The raid utility supplied direct from Sil site is more informative than mobo
raid utility, however I experienced constant problems in running this, so
wasnt able to use it. ( I also tried Sil raid drivers from Sil)
Having experienced hd failures I didnt lose any data as I have full backup,
both on/off site.
I have purchased an Adaptec Raid card, which I will install when
circumstances permit - I have little faith with the onboard raid. (A7N8X
delux v2.0)
