RAID with firewire drives

Assuming I can get enough firewire drives working (see my other post), can
I configure them to use RAID for better reliability and / or data rate? How
does the data rate of an IDE drive compare to firewire or USB 2.0? What are
the pros and cons of using RAID with fireware drives instead of with IDE
drives?

Thanks,

Bill

I haven't tried it, and I'm not certain about this, but I believe that
software RAID doesn't function with removeable devices such as USB or
firewire.

I think the fastest firewire data rate is S400 (393.216Mbits/sec).
UDMA-100 IDE data rates are 100 MB/sec. That's megabytes for IDE vs
megabits for firewire. Obviously all the best internal interfaces are much
faster than the external ones.

It would seem like a needless expense to go with firewire since you aren't
just paying for the drive, but also the housing and the extra electronics.
Is there some particular reason you want external drives that would justify
the added expense?

I agree, but the boss already bought them. So I just wanted to try to
configure them in a more reliable manner.

Thanks.
