hi , i would like to know about installation and configuration of smart array
controller. suggest some useful links also.
cheers

thanx Bob I ,
i would like to know whether HP smart array 642 controller is compatible
with intel serverboard SE7500CW2. if i use three 72GB hard drives what will
be the total storage capacity. if i use a smaller capacity let say 18.1 or 36
GB hard drive for OS and applications what will be the change in total
storage capacity. is it necessary to use two same capacity hard drives for
OS, if i want to add three 72 GB for data storage. may be you feel this
silly . pls. help me before i get in to trouble.

cheers

Contact HP support for compatibility issues. One drive is always used
for parity, so 3 72 gig drives would leave 144 gig for actual storage.
Please read the documentation on RAID setup. Placing the OS or data on a
non-RAID drive will not "use up" and RAID drive space.

hi Bob,
thanx to all the information. i would like to say that if you want to use
any HP product in any machine other than HP please don't call HP support for
any kind of help. when i called HP support they said the device is not tested
in intel serverboard. so they are help less. but the happy news i would like
to share with microsoft community is that the HP Smart Array 642 controller
is fully compatible with most of the Intel server and workstation boards.
(SE7500CW2 &SP2) i tried with 2 boards it was working properly without any
problem. only thing is do not use the HP Smart start CD for booting . Browse
the cd for the driver file and copy it to a floppy and use it during the OS
installation. i used four 72GB hard disks for the RAID. RAID 5 is created
for a single logical drive and created 2 partitions in it, one for the OS and
the other for data server. hope this information will help some one like me
in the future. i spent lot of time for collecting the required documents and
information and then came the actual exercise. finally i got the best result.

cheers....
