RAID as EIDE?

Greetings . . .

On my Asus P4PE motherboard, there's a RAID connector located near my
primary and secondary EIDE channels. Is it true that this would act as a
third EIDE channel if I wasn't using it in a RAID configuration? In other
words, would it be possible to add a second hard drive using this
connection, keeping my existing hard drive on the primary channel and my two
optical drives on the secondary channel?

If so, how would I set it up (i.e.: BIOS, drivers, etc)?

Thanks,
Tripod

I'm not sure about your motherboard, but on most of the other Asus
motherboards, the RAID channel cannot be used as a "normal" IDE port.
That is, use it as raid or don't use it at all. Again, this might not
be the case on your motherboard. The issue is in the BIOS, not the
hardware. In fact, on the P4T533 (which is as I described), there is a
"hacked" non-Asus bios available that does allow the raid channels to be
used as normal IDE channels. But such use is not supported by the Asus
BIOS.

I can use the VIA RAID ATA133 IDE as plain ATA133 channels, works very well.
Just enable the controller and let it boot without setting up any RAID
options.

They work absolutely great on the P4P800. I have two ATA133 HDs with their
own channel using the VIA IDE RAID connector. This leaves the Intel IDE
(ATA100) for DVD-ROM, CD-RW etc.

They work on P4P800 DLX but seemingly not on P4C800E-D.

I think the P4C uses Promise controlelr instead of VIA, and I think Promise
has always been RAID only.

On the the P4C800-E Deluxe you can setup normal ide or RAID for both the Intel
chipset controller and the Promise controller.

My Acorp 6A815EPD also has a PATA RAID. I have my primary (only) HD
plugged into it. It feels very fast - pPerhaps fast is not the word -
it feels "smooth" Disk operations do not slow the machine down.

My advice, back up any thing you cannot afford to lose (always a good
idea) and give it a try.
