Okay, sorry, not exactly the right NG, but the IBM site gives nothing. Have
poured over the books without luck.
System has two hot-swap drives configured to RAID-1, mirroring. Does that
mean if either drive fails, we simply pull it out and plug in a new one? And
it mirrors by itself? [manuals are silent on this]
many thanks

If a drive fails then the controller should kick it offline. When you
replace the disk your array management software should prompt to rebuild the
array. You can also start the machine using your controller utilities to
enter controller bios and rebuild the array here.

Excellent! Thank you!
Follow up Q: can we get an identical third hot swap drive and rotate it
weekly with drive 1 or 2, and then keep that spare "away from the site"? as
a copy/backup? [twice in 6 years we've lost everything]

thanks again!

I suppose you could but what's the point in the raid1 then? How did you lose
everything from a raid1? I suspect one drive failed and was not attended to,
then the other failed.

Sorry, this is our first raid1. The earlier "losses" were from fire and then
theft. We just want to keep a hard drive copy off site. We never did recover
from the gigantic loss of client information, sales records, etc. It was a
disaster...!

Boss simply wants to have a copy at home, and CDR is not practicle. We're
hoping to swap the drive say every Monday or something, but don't want to
screw up the server or the drives.

thanks again. Sorry for the dumb questions, but we're totally in the dark on
getting answers. Much appreciated!

You might want to look into the database backup possibilities for the data
store you're using and possibly tape backup.

You idea of using one of the mirrored disks as a "backup" is ok as far as it
goes.
It'll work best if: a) when you come to use the disk it's going into a
server with identical ahrdware b) you use the disk 0
You'd be better getting a full Ghost image of the server on a weekly /
monthly basis to an external USB drive and backing up on a daily basis, again
you could bakup to an external USB drive.
Perhaps you're looking to do this as cheaply as possible, but tell your
boss, not to scrimp on disaster recovery..............it'll cost in the long
run. You might never need your disaster recovery, but when you do, you'll see
where the money went and you'll be very very glad you spent it ;)

Depends on the server model, but generally, yes.
