I just set up a raid 1 system in a computer. I am trying to understand how
the hot spare would work since the way the raid is currently cabled is as
one harddisk being a master and the spare being a slave. How can the slave
operate as a master if the master harddisk goes down? I do not know
anything about raid.

You can operate with a single drive jumpered as master or as slave, you
don't need two drives per IDE cable regardless of jumpering.

If one of the drives failed, you'd get some kind of warning at boot about
the failure. You could replace the failed drive and mirror the new one or
just continue booting from the existing working drive - enjoy them crabs
