RAID 0 question

Hi,

I am considering setting up a RAID 0 array with 2 80MB Maxtor DiamondMax
Plus9 SATA disks (I already have 1 and for another 60 quid, I though I'd
be silly not to...)

I've researched a little and found mixed views about the benefits.
Ignoring the fact that if 1 disk fails then I lose data on them both (I
back up to another machine on the network and also periodically to CD),
does anyone else have any views?

I'd be buying another disk anyway (possibly bigger than 80 if I decide
not to use RAID), but its just deciding on whether to set up RAID 0 or
not bother.

I don't do any serious video editing or anything that uses huge files -
just the standard Office apps, Photoshop (small files), games, etc.

The rest of my spec is:
Athlon XP 3200+
2x256MB PC3200 (512MB)
ASUS A7N8X Deluxe (onboard SATA controller with RAID 0/1)

Any views would be very welcome. Thanks!

RAID 0 with 7200 drives is pointless today. Just get a single Raptor for
your OS, and you get a readily noticable drop in access time from 12 to 8ms.

Thanks for your response, however the £200+ needed for a 74GB WD Raptor
is out of my league right now...

Why do you say RAID 0 is pointless?

They do come in 36GB, 170 CA$. Get a cheap 7200 IDE for excess storage.

It doesn't improve access time and the STR of single drives is excellent.

Its basically more hassle than its worth with modern 7200 rpm
drives which are plenty fast enough for personal desktop PCs.

You'll likely be quite disappointed at the performance.

It can be worth doing if you are doing raw video capture
and the drive speed is marginal for that, but even thats quite
uncommon now with drives now with such a decent performance.
