Is there a way to get XP Pro to runn a software mirror..
not remotly.. I want XP and the mirror on the same box...

Operating systems on which mirrored volumes are available
Mirrored volumes are available on all computers running
Windows 2000 Server, Windows 2000 Advanced Server,
Windows 2000 Datacenter Server, and . Mirrored volumes
are not available on computers running Windows 2000
Professional, Windows XP Home Edition, Windows XP
Professional, or Windows XP 64-Bit Edition. You can,
however, use a computer running Windows 2000 Professional
or Windows XP Professional to create mirrored volumes on
a remote computer running Windows 2000 Server, Windows
2000 Advanced Server, Windows 2000 Datacenter Server, or .

Im not sure why you would want the OS to do the mirroring when you can
probably get a HD RAID controller to handle all the work and make the
RAID transparent to the OS.

I have a DFI motherboard that includes an Intel raid controller and have
set up a RAID 1 array using two 160 GB SATA drives. Windows XP
Professional works great on this box.

(I went with a RAID 1 because I was looking for safety, and a RAID 0,
even if it may improve data transfer rates, will go 'poof' if a drive
fails.)

totally agree with '(e-mail address removed)'.

forget back ups, get two hdd's and configure a raid 1 set up. your m/b may
support it or you can buy a promise raid card for not alot of money. raid 0
for performance yes, but when one of the hdd's fails (and it inevitably
will) what will you do without the 3000+ mp3's you've downloaded from
kazaa??? start again????

if your hdd fails in raid 1 then you still have all your info intact on the
surviving hdd and can rebuild the array in about an hour.

In my experience, Hard drives just don't fail that often. Plus, if you burn
all of your data to CD/DVD/Tape on a regular basis, it's a mere annoyance in
the end if something does happen. I like to think of it as "an excuse to
buy bigger drives to RAID". hah

An excuse?!?!?!

Yes, I will admit it! (laughing)

(I already had that conversation with my lovely wife who can smell an
excuse a long way off....But she still tolerates me)

I also wanted to learn how to set up a RAID array and I could not find
anyone who would 'trust' me with their production server for some reason :)

PS

Rebuilding the array can be tricky -- I read up on the process and there
are some easy ways to screw up big time, so be VERY CAREFUL when
selecting the TARGET and SOURCE drives.

So it appears to me that having a RAID 1 (or higher) is not a good
excuse to fail to perform backups.
