Both programs appear to do what I need. If I wasn't on Dial-up I,d simply
download both and try them. To save me several hours of time does anyone
have any thoughts or experience with these?

RAG Time Solo is a desktop publish programm where as OO is a full office
suite. A word processor is different from a DTP and it does depend on your
needs.

A DTP has the the power of word processing for limited drawing
capabilities. But allow you place the data preciely where you want. Its a
mix of a word processor and a drawing app combined but not fully as
powerful as a full word processing or drawing app. You wouldn't want to
write a book in it or design complex drawings.

On the other hand The word processor and the drawing tools of OpenOffice
make it very powerful but the full suite is 80mb big (30mb bigger than Rag
Time) However the extras it has make it well worth while the download.

I use and like both, but for different tasks.

OpenOffice.org is an office suite, including word processor, spread
sheet, presentation and so on. It also includes spell checker and all
this stuff. So, if you are looking for a word processor, take
OpenOffice.org. It is much more comfortable for everyday use.

RagTime is a publishing program and has great layout features. You can
use it for word processing and spread sheets, but its main purpose is to
create catalogues and the like. The free version does not have a spell
checker. If you are into doing layout or need to print on a professional
printer, you are better of with RagTime.

I don't know how it is like over there in your country, but here in
Germany, you can get both programs on PC magazine cover CDs, if you
browse the shelves of a good paper store.

Just the day before yesterday, I found Ragtime private 5.6.5 (German) on
a not too intellectual mag called PC Praxis. And OO will be on the PC
Welt every now and then. Perhaps you can find similar cover CDs in
Canada, and get them for a low price, already stored on a CD.

As it happens I just lucked onto Open Office this a.m. (included with PC
Utilities Mag) so I will only have to download Ragtime if OO isn't what I
am looking for.

Thanks to all for advice.
