I have software to program a 2-way radio for the fire
service but I have not been able to get XP to recognize
the cable. XP will recognize the cable as new hardware,
and want to install, but, being how the radio is not
typical hardware there is nothing to install.
Unfortunately the software seems a litlle archaic and the
cable has a serial connection. Can anyone assist me in
finding the proper port to open so that I can program.

You need to find the author/company that wrote the program
to get an update. Search Google for the company or software
name.

If you post the name of the radio and details perhaps
someone can help more. Many serial devices will not work
under XP.

or you might find a cheap machine and run win 95/98 or plain DOS if that is
what the application expects.

Make sure you're setting up the correct COM port
in your software, ie; COM1, COM2. Make sure it
doesn't conflict with any modems, if you have
one. In the advanced COM port settings, try
disabling FiFo buffering. Also, if you're BIOS
is set for plug'n'play, you may have to change
the COM port from Auto, to the actual memory
address, and IRQ.

Consider this: if your "archaic" software is trying to directly
access the Com port, without going through the OS, then it won't work.
Period. XP won't allow that.

In that case you can:

1. Go back to whatever OS you were using before.
2. See if you vendor has a new version that is XP compatable.
3. Kiss the software goodbye and find a more modern program.
