I have a Radeon x1600 Pro 512mb PCI Express x16. Everything during the
install of vista seems to work fine, however after the install's final reboot
(when its supposed to get you to create your windows username) all I see is a
black screen with the mouse cursor (which does seem to move - not frozen).
The only way I can get to a desktop is if I boot into safemode where I can
install the ATI Catalyst Vista drivers which seem to work. Once I restart the
computer from safe mode Windows seems to work correctly with Glass enabled
etc. However if I reboot again, I get the black screen. So it looks like if I
want glass I have to boot into safe mode and reinstall the ATI Vista drivers
before I can boot into regular mode.

I know that the Radeon Mobility x1600 has had some issues and only works
with the standard VGA display adapter driver (which obvisouly doesnt support
glass). Is it maybe because the Mobility and the PCI-E versions are built on
the same chipset?

Is anyone else having problems like this? Please let me know.

Here's a little work-around until ATI releases drivers that actually work for
your vid-card.

After you have rebooted from safe-mode in a normal vista session, let it
install everything it finds without rebooting. Once Vista has finished
installing all those drivers, go to your Device Manager and upgrade the
graphics adapter driver using the INF files from Catalyst 6.5 for Windows XP.
The installation program for Catalyst itself doesn't work but you'll have
everything you need to install the drivers in
C:\ATI\SUPPORT\6-5_xp-2k_dd_32464\2KXP_INF afterwards (default installation
directory)

Tell me if that works for you.

Hi
I also have ati x1600 pro but vista does not identify it, on start up
display adapter unkown any suggestions the name does appear in device
driver but the drivers do not work
thanks

hi,
yes it is pluged in, everything works in winxp/ dual boot just in vista
screen does not indicated display adapter same with the samsung monitor not
shown

I have the "black screen" problem also. Our newly installed Visiontek ATI
Radeon X1300 / 512 after post gives a very dark gray unreadable screen.
Ctrl, Alt, Delete brings back the green sighout screen. We have downloaded
and installed appropriate driver software from ATI,, to no avail. Although
the claim for this video card is that Windows Vista is one of its system
requirements. We have an Asus motherboard that include its own Intel 945G
chipset that include the onboard 950 GPU, so Vista Beta2 works fine without
a video card. We just saved $200 !
