Please don't flame me if I've got the wrong idea here. I'm under the
impression ATi are not charging for the upgrade to MMC8, only charging to
send you a CD. If this is the case, can anyone upload the relevant ISO to
my ftp site please?

If it's allowed: ftp://rowyerboat.homedns.org/incoming
If it's not allowed, then please accept my apologies.

Steve ;)

I'm afraid do have the wrong idea.

ATI is charging for the CD because they had to pay royalties for the new
player software. People buying new cards get it for free. People with older
cards can either continue using the previous -- but still functional --
player or pay $10 to upgrade to the new one.

Putting an ISO on your ftp site would be illegal.

Apology accepted ;>)

That's right, Skid.

And you can download and install all the components except the DVD player
from ATI's site for free, so they're _not_ charging for the upgrade to MMC
8.x, only the DVD player, Steve. And, incidentally, I wouldn't think people
buying new cards actually get the DVD player for free, either; I would think
it was figured into the price.

Exactly. Just like the cost of the old player was figured into the price of
older cards.

It's simple, really, but a lot of people -- especially those with older
versions they expected to be eternally updated for free -- just didn't get
it.

The older version still works fine. I gladly paid the $10 for a better
feature set, including the ability to take screen shots from DVDs. Works
great, and I will be able to download future versions for free -- until ATI
swaps third-party software again.

No the older one doesn't work. I have an original CD from my previous
ATI-card (MMC 7-series) but my current ATI is an OEM AIW without any CD at
all. In my case (the old ATI was a Radeon 64MB vivo and the new one AIW
9800SE) only MMC 8 and related programs/drivers work with this cards. Older
players or software crash.

My point was that people who bought older cards could still use the player
that came with them, paying to update was an option and not a necessity.

I'll admit I've never heard of anyone getting an AIW with no software CD at
all. If the vendor who sold it to you can't help and there is nothing to
download on the manufacturer's site, you may have to pay somebody for a
player -- whether PowerDVD, WinDVD or ATI.

Seems to me like you've got two completely separate issues here, Manu:
a) that the vendor didn't supply you with the appropriate software for
the card - I would have thought the vendor should at least supply a CD
with the display drivers - and b) that you can't get older software to
run with your card. That surprises me; I was under the impression
that all Radeon drivers and software were supposed to work with all
appropriate cards. Again, I think this is something you should take
up with the vendor or the OEM manufacturer. You don't say who the OEM
manufacturer actually is.

New Radeon drivers will work with older boards, but older Radeon drivers
don't necessarily work with newer boards.

Ok, let's get this in perspective... if you manage to get *any* ATI product
working properly, you're doing jolly well! - period.

I think we're all using different words to say the same thing. Manu can't
expect the drivers and software he got with a previous-generation card to
work with a brand-new card, and he can't expect ATI to upgrade his old
software for free.

I'm surprised he got an AIW with no software, that's like buying a new car
and finding out the wheels weren't included.

The point is, it isn't an ATi product - it's an OEM. I would say Manu's
problem here is with the vendor or the OEM manufacturer.

Don't get me wrong here. I got this OEM card pretty cheap and since I had
the drivers from the internet that was no problem. The MMC is also available
from the net. It's only the DVD-player part which is a problem installing it
if you don't have a CD.

Again I use PowerDVD (which I got with my DVD-player) so playing DVD's in
itself is no problem at all.

It's just that PowerDVD doesn't integrate into the ATI set of programs. Even
the remote cannot be be utilised to the full with PowerDVD.

Nonetheless I'm happy with my current system and software combination. All
things work and I have no problems whatsoever. Just the estetics could be
better :-)

BTW. Are there ppl who use the classic ATI-them and use their XP without all
the bells and whistles (classic mode)?

I have a nice theme to accompany your MMC look and feel :-)
If there's anybody interested let me know.

regards,

Manu T
