Radeon 9800XT install Question

Can I connect the card directly to the psu or do I have to follow in
instructions in the user manual? The reason I am asking is that I am
using only SATA hard drives in my new system, and they have a
different power connector.

Directly, to the PSU, would be the favored sitiuation, regardless.

Yep, use a dedicated connector.
