Radeon 9800 Custom Resolutions?

Hey all,

I was wondering... Is it possible to define custom resolutions for a Radeon
9800? Without using additional tools like PowerStrip?

This is my first ATI card. My three previous video cards have been nVidia
cards. With the nVidia drivers, you can tweak the .inf file before you
install the drivers to add whatever resolutions you want. Can you do
something similar (either before or after driver install) with ATI's
drivers? Or is there another approach.

Why do I want to do this? I want to run at a resolution higher than
1280x960, but lower than 1600x1200. I set up a custom resolution of
1440x1080 on my nVidia card, and that was perfect.

Why don't I want to use PowerStrip? Well, PowerStrip works great, but it
doesn't switch into the desired video mode until after PowerStrip starts up
(well, it appears Windows starts up at the correct resolution, but at 60Hz
until PowerStrip starts up and then it switches to 85Hz). This results in a
lot of annoying screen flicker when Windows is starting up, and also slows
the startup process down. Apart from that, I'm not interested in the other
features of PowerStrip, so it's just one more application to load at startup
that I'd prefer to do without.

While the solution for this with nVidia cards was not for the faint of
heart, at least there WAS a solution that didn't require additional
software. Is there a similar solution for the Radeon 9800?

Thanks,

Tim

The Omega drivers allow for custom resolutions on the 9800.

Thanks Andrew... Good tip. Worked great for my primary monitor, but on my
secondary monitor (CRT plugged into the DVI socket via an adapter) I
couldn't get anything other than 60Hz for the custom resoltion (1400x1050)
.... On the Display Properties / Settings / Advanced / Monitor tab, it let me
*SELECT* 85Hz, but even with 85Hz selected here, it was still only giving me
60Hz (according to my monitor, and also by the information on the Displays
tab).

Very frustrating.

Any ideas why I could be seeing this problem?

Thanks again,

Mason
