I have bought a Radeon 9600 Pro on a Powercolour board in order to play
Star
Wars: Knights of the old Republic.
However even with the recent patch, the game freezes and I cannot get out of
it. I know there are many issues with this game and have read forums where
gamers are still experiencing problems. The hardware scan says I've passed
all the criteria and I can't help feeling this is a graphics card issue.
Any thoughts or suggestions?

Turn Fastwrites on. That cured it for me.

I had the game working perfectly with Cat 3.7 drivers and a 9500 pro (about the same speed as a 9600
pro) close to the time it came out.. Left the game 75% finished, and came back to it with a 9800 pro
and cat 4.6 recently. It ran unstable, crashes to desktop every hour or so (although it was a lot
faster because of the new hardware). Seems that the best drivers for this game are not the latest
catalysts. Nevertheless, I finished the game. A nice plot twist close to the end. Watch what
everyone says in the storyline and see if you can guess what it is (I didnt :)

I have tried to turn on fastwrites but when I reboot it reverts back to off.
Any reason why?

The BGioware message boards have discussed this problem a lot. I fixed mine
by using a .dll file from the older drivers, per a suggestion from the
forum.

Can you tell me where I can get a download for the file and the proper
installation procedure?

No idea, but I know a simple way around: Omega drivers. During installation
they offer to set FW on or off. Whichever you choose sticks for good.

Where do I get Omega drivers from? Why didn't they come with the card?

You can get them here: http://www.omegadrivers.net

They can not come with the card, since they are a third party modification
based on the official drivers. For the same reason there isn't a set based
on CAT 4.7 yet, but it should arrive within a week.

Say when you tried turning on Fast Write did you also check in your bios at
start up that it supports FW. YOU can turn it on in bios as well. Thats what
I had to do for my B.M. 741GX-M.
