Hi all: HP athlon 800mhz win xp pro, 256mb, My power supply is 185 watts
Original AGP video card failed and purchased new radeon9200SE
after installing computer locks on start at black winxp screen (blue
scrolling bar locks). After locking need to hard shut off then start and
most of the time starts on second try. Any ideas on what may have caused
issue or where to look? as Radeon suggests a bigger power supply or using
the 7000 model of card.
Thanks, ED

If it didn't boot on subsequent attempts I would've suspected the drivers
(among other things) but since it does, 3 things I'd look at are:

BIOS settings related to AGP

Motherboard-specific issues, failing capacitors or reports of that
specific board having any problems with supplying power to AGP port.

Insufficient power supply, the more likely problem. You might note the
voltage readings in the bios if available, or in a windows utility, but
far better to take readings with a voltage/multimeter. The 3.3V reading
is taken by inserting the meter probe into the backside of the ATX
connector (while the system is running). Sometimes OEMs will rather
conservatively rate their power supplies, so it might be better than the
average 185W, but if it's a mATX size, it probably is only worth 185W,
even if functioning perfectly per it's design it would be borderline at
best, likely insufficient capacity... HP really didn't want you to
upgrade, rather buy a new box from them.

I have the same card, used with Intel m/b, 2.8gHz P4, 400w p/s. Under
win2k, startup proceeds normally through the first two screens having
progress bars. Then screen goes black. By experiment, I found that I
could rescue the startup by cycling power on the (LCD) monitor, leaving the
cpu powered up.

The same hardware boots without problem under Linux, which is where I spend
most of my time.

I have a hunch the problem in my setup is driver related. Maybe yours is
too.

I have a similar problem with the same card.
Switching the monitor off/on brings it back. I also notice it whenever
I do a screen resolution change.
