Is this what the next series of cards be will be called? And when are they
due? :)

Im thinking this has been discussed before. No idea, and your guess is as
good as any.

That's what I'd think, and I have said as much before...

My guess would have been like Opteron, but that was taken already...

or just go for a Radeon II renumeration

or just go for a Radeon II renumeration

They could, but I think that'd be too much.

"The brand new Radeon II 7000!"

Or, even worse, going with a lower number:

"The brand new Radeon II 300!"

If I was a n00b, I'd think that a Radeon II 300 was not as good as my
Radeon 9600 Pro.

It would work though for the first one, the Radeon II or Radeon 2,
possibly. But after that, when they had to add the extra numbers, it would
be a mouthful.

They could use two names initially, such as "The ATI (new name here):
NextGen Radeon", then just drop the Radeon reference for future products
once the new name is well recognized. They'd be foolish not to forge the
Radeon association first IMHO.

You mean a mouthful, something like GeForce 4 Ti4800SE, or GeForce 4 MX440
etc. I think it could be done.

Good point, I wouldn't be surprised if they did it.
Companies spend a huge ammount of effort building recognised product names,
it is quite a move to walk away from such a successful product name such as
'Radeon' or 'GeForce'. Ford have been building 'Mustang' cars since the
60's, I cant imagine MS will ever abandon 'Windows' or 'Office' or
'Excel'.

Well, cars have always been recognized by a year number in addition to a
model name, and now most of Microsoft's Products are as well (XP being the
notable exception, but you'll notice they got back on track with 2003 on
the server side...). I can't see ATI releasing the Radeon 2003.

More important than the model family name is the brand name, and I think
that everyone will agree that Intel, AMD, Plextor, and many others (IMHO,
including ATI and nVidia) could move away from their 'core' product family
names without much loss.

For example, while I'm sure that the Pentium will be around for a while,
the latest & greatest from Intel is now the Itanium. AMD will likely keep
the Athlon for a while, but the Opteron is again more powerful. Still, we
know that anything from Intel or AMD will be well received, whether or not
they keep their more recognizable product family names. Likewise, even if
Plextor dropped the PlexWriter name, we'd still know that they made some
of the best optical drives around.

I don't think anyone really cares about the GeForce or the Radeon. If
nVidia's next card was called the "nVidia Striker", no one would care
about the name, as long as it ran Doom III better than last year's cards.

However, you make a few valid points, and I really wouldn't be surprised
if they did find a kooky way to keep the Radeon name alive. All I'm saying
is don't be surprised if they don't ;)

FWIW, the AMD 64-bit chip intended for desktop machines is called the
"Athlon 64". The one for servers is called the "Opteron".

Geforce 4 ti4200, etc.
Geforce 3 mx200, etc.
Rendition Verite 2 1000, 2200, etc
Voodoo 3 2000, 3000, etc.

Good good, you read Chimera's post a full day before yours I see.

As I mentioned in a response to his post, That's a good point, one I had
forgotten about, etc. etc.

I still think it's too confusing, and I personally would do something
different.

I wouldn't mind seeing ATI come up with a new product name either, but I
think maybe its still a few generations off.

Could be. I guess there's really no point to speculating.

Ok, fine then. I think it will be called the ATI Carnivore.

;)

and I can just imagine the look on your face when you read the news tomorrow
and it says 'ATI Announces its new Carnivore range of Graphics Accelerators'

The look on my face? Try imagining how much I'd gloat here on the NG... ;)

Until they screw up the Radeon name with a poor showing - I say keep
it. Perhaps it is Nvidia who should consider dropping GeForce..
