Don,

I have had similar problems over the years. I suggest that you take
the defective fan over to Comp USA, Fry's, or a similar store and see
if they have a replacement. Comp USA has several generic CPU fan
kits, and one will either be an exact fit, or plenty close enough.
About $10 for the kit. Simpler, and probably as cheap as getting the
OEM to swap out a new one.

On the 8500 the heat sink is bonded to the chip and the fan is screwed
down into a recess in the heat sink, it's not a commonly available off
the shelf fan, and there is no mounting for a generic heat sink--while
you can remove the heat sink from an 8500 and bond on a new one, that
does void the warranty and if you screw it up you can kill the chip.

I found that the blade of the cooling fan on my Sapphire Radeon 8500 was
stuck. I verified that it wasn't working at all.
I carefully removed the fan assembly and, using a 12 volt supply, was able
to get it working again using a few drops of light oil (from Radio Shack).
It seems to be working OK now.
I am not sure of the procedure to get OEM replacements for a "built-by"
board. The board is less than a year old so is still under warranty, but I
would be willing to pay for a replacement if that would keep the hassle to a
minimum. The board works fine so I really don't want to ship it back and
have to re-install my old board.
TIA,
Don

I think the card they are using is a 7500 but the procedure should be
exactly the same on an 8500 - use a 'blue orb' or similar gpu fan as a
replacement (should have thermal adhesive tape included for attaching it).

my 8500 has a Tt Crystal Orb attached ~ card came pre-modded by another
user, but it works great

Thanks, all, for your replies.
Tony, I don't think I am brave enough to attempt the fix your link
suggests. Good information but the fix seems to be geared to overclockers
who need additional cooling.
Another question came to mind. My board has been running with no cooling
fan for some unknown lenght of time with no problem. Is the fan necessary
for normal no-load operation and is only required whith game operation?

Have you found a fan replacement yet? I have a fan gone south on my ATI AIW
8500 DV and need a replacement - sent it to ATI. They said it was modded
(was not - I had removed the fan for inspection only and put it back on
upside down - OOPS!) and made no replacement and gave absolutuely no help in
trying to locate a seller of this fan (Adda). Their customer service has
been quite lacking and I think I will avoid using their products in the
future but need to get this card fixed. Anyone who can help with a fan
source please reply to me directly at lglaeser at comcast.net. TIA!

Hey Lloyd,
I need a fan also for my Sapphire 8500LE 128MB AGP card also.
I'm really not sure that card (standard clocking) even requires a card. The
heatsink seems to remain fairly cool (not hot).
Perhaps I could even find a way to safely remove it and install an old 486
HS on it.
BTW, I sure would recommend that you 'munge' your email addy when using a
newsgroup unless you love Spam.
Cheers.

Of course, I meant to type fan and not card.

I'm surprised that they wouldn't do the replacement for a price.

Go over to <http://www.rage3d.com> and search on "8500 fan" and I
believe you'll find some good discussion of replacing the fan on the
8500--the way that it's normally done is to pull off the whole assembly
and bond on a different one with a more readily available fan.

I believe that Mouser Electronics stocks the whole HSF assembly
<http://www.mouser.com/index.cfm?handler=listproduct&&categoryid=79&lst
_pcode=6642> but not the fan itself.

I ended up just purchasing a $5 p54c fan at a local computer shop and
screwing it on the heatsink that is already on the chip. It sticks out
enough that it won't work if you have a card in the slot right next to it
but I have enough slots and the fan is the exact same size as the heatsink
so it screws on just fine. Is there a program that will tell me if the chip
is overheating? So far everything seems okay but no way to tell for sure.
And yes, I was surprised also but they refused to give me any help and they
absolutely would not sell me a replacement :-(...

No, I haven't. My board is a Sapphire purchased from Newegg. I couldn't
find "customer support" only "tech support" at the Sapphire site. I e-mailed
tech support asking for direction on how to get a fan replacement. They
said I should contact my retailer.
Yeh sure. I am going to contact Newegg for a problem covered under
manufacturer's warrantee.
So far, the oil fix seems to be working.
