When I go to Windows Update,
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp it says

"Checking for the latest version of the Windows Update software......".

And there it remains and even after 20 minutes does not change. It used
to work just fine and either identify new downloads or confirm I was up to
date. Suggestions?

Do you mean it never presents the "Scan for Updates? link
after the initial screen you described?
Need a little clearer def, I think.

I have found that some mis-configured popup killers will cause this to
happen. I use PopUpCop. I can cause this action if I set things wrong.

Thanking all who responded but this one from Carey struck the magic chord.
Will the usual suspect please stand up.
And of course, once again, it is .................................Norton
Internet Security.
I disabled it and Arthurs yer Auntie. Thanks Carey - I should have thought
of that myself.

I tried the link this morning (9AM, EST). It worked fine.

However, in the past I have noticed that sometimes Windows Update can be
painfully slow, or essentially unreachable. This usually occurs immediately
after Microsoft releases a new security patch, and the whole world is trying
to download it at the same time. In those case, I wait a day and try it
again.
