I started the windows xp professional setup cd and half
way through setup I changed my mind and decided not to
install it. the program states to press f3 to quit the
setup. when I do this it turns of the computer and
restarts it and the setup program stars again. I took out
the cd up it still reboots the same way. I have turned
the power off and the same thing happens. I can't exit
this setup program. does anyone know the secret?

Hi Garret,

Finish the install, then uninstall (assuming you were upgrading). Otherwise,
you may need to format and start clean. Why would you choose to abort an
installation?

The best answer is to finish Setup and then uninstall
it. Short of that you've got a real mess to deal with,
start with the Boot.INI and work from there. Essentially
what is going on is that you've started setup and your
system needs to reboot during setup, therefore your
system is configured to do nothing but run setup any time
it boots (at least until setup is done, at which point
everything is put to normal). To manually hack your way
back to the old OS is very time consuming and not always
possible (depending on the type of install you did), so
it's best to just finish setup and then remove it.
