Quit asking me to install hardware

I have both Win98 and Win2000 on this computer. (dual boot)
Win98 works fine. Win2000 keeps asking me to install hardware
everytime I bootup. One thing it wants is a PCI device. Of course it
does not say what device, it just insists I must install this thing,
whatever the heck it is. I assume its something built into the
motherboard, but am clueless what. The other one is my Canon LBP465
laser printer. This printer has no drivers for Win2000, so I can not
install it regardless. I only use a printer about 5 times a year, so
I really dont care if it's installed in Win2K. I can use Win98 the
few times I need it.

THe problem, I can not get rid of that nag screen insisting I install
these things. Either I unplug the printer parallel cable, or I am
begged and annoyed to install it. And that other think I am clueless
what the hell it wants.

How can I stop this crap? Otherwise Win2K works fine and whatever PCI
device it wants to install is not needed because everything works.

Look in Device Manager to see if there is a PCI device listed that has a
yellow exclamation mark?
It may tell you what it is.
Or, in Device Manager, you may have some duplicates (don't worry about USB
duplicates).
If you have duplicates, you might have to delete all of them and let Win
2000 reinstall just the one needed.
I don't know how to stop 2000 from detecting your printer each time.

Thanks for the reply

It's listed in Device Manager as PCI device. That's it !!!!
That's what irritates me. I have no clue what it wants. I thought
Win2000 was a little "smarter" than Win98, but I guess not.

As for the printer, I guess I'll just have to keep the parallel cable
unplugged except when I need to print. Not a big deal since I use the
printer so seldom.

Thanks again

More than likely it yearns for the mobo chipset drivers. Check the pc or
mobo manufacturer's web site.

For the printer, instead of unplugging the parallel cable, turn off
the printer. Windows shouldn't detect it if it is turned off, and
shouldn't nag you to install drivers.

Another approach would be to give in and install a driver - yes, I
know you don't have one that works, but you should be able to tell
Windows to use the generic text driver and be done with it. I don't
have Windows 2000 in front of me right now so I can't give you the
steps, but it shouldn't be too hard to figure out how to pick an
arbitrary driver to install for it.

Right click on it and disable it.

Not sure if I understand what you're saying. As I said, Canon quit
makingf drivers for this model printer after Win98. Honestly I can
not understand why the Win98 driver will not work, but it don't. This
is documented on several websites about this printer.

Turning off the printer is a good idea. I did not know that would do
it. Thats easy.

Thanks

What I was trying to say is to install any printer driver at all - not
that this would let the printer work for you in Windows 2000, but that
it would stop it from nagging you. Just tell it to show the list of
drivers, then show all drivers, not just compatible ones, and pick a
driver, any driver. Hopefully, that will shut it up.

Of course, if you ever forget it has a bogus driver installed and try
to use it, who knows how it will react... o.O
