Hi guys/girls,

You've probably seen this question many times before, but what's the
quietest fan for an XP2800 and an A7N8X? Pretty much all the reviews
I've seen provide advice for those who want to overclock their
machines and are worried about cooling. This is not my situation - I'm
not going to overclock my cpu so I'm only concerned with noise.

Any advice?

Thanks,

Ash.

I'm no fan specialist, but when I researched the components for a new system
(my first do-it-yourself system), I ended up buying a Zalman 7000 AlCu fan.
It's so quiet, I can hardly hear it. I'm sure there are other equally quiet
fans, but this one works well for me. On my P4/3.0C, the idle temp is
around 34C and under Prime95 test, it goes up to around 50C. I do not
overclock, but have tried 10% overclocking and the temp went to 55C under
Prime95 load.

Zalman area quality and quiet. A few options to choose from so visit their
site www.zalman.co.kr

I use these two items together to achieve a very quiet, yet thermally
responsive CPU cooling setup:

http://www.kdcomputers.com/eui/prime/profile/799/25/component.htm
http://www.kdcomputers.com/eui/prime/profile/1136/25/component.htm

The fan comes with a thermal sensor, and I shove it down between the
HS fins, I suppose ideally, one would put the sensor under the CPU and
attach it to the CPU underside in some fashion. This setup keeps my
Duron 1600 (running at 2000 MHz) below 40C except in the most extreme
conditions, and my case cooling is not even "mediocre", imho.

Hi i've see that there is some fitting for the 80mm fans. but i cant find any for the 120 mm fans
witch it give higher cfm for less DB. Is there any adapter for this use some where?

Haven't seen one, but I think I've seen a window fan adapter
somewhere, just kidding.

The 80cm-60cm adapter is the only one I've seen in retail or online.

How about a Thermaltake Silent Boost. I have one; it's reasonably quiet and
works well.
Yep that's what I've been thinking of getting. The Zalmans are
supposedly quieter but I move my machine around a bit and I'm worried
about the weight. The last thing I need is for the heatsink to snap
off!

Thanks everybody for your advice.

Ash.

I think the Zalman is only about 1 or two decibels quiter, not much of a
difference. They're heavy, and tricky to install.

Seconded. I replaced my Thermatake Volcano 7+ which was locked to high speed with a
Thermaltake Silent boost.
Whisper quiet and fits fine. All copper base with extremely thin fins for cooling. Dropped
my temps from mid-high 50C to upper 40's at 100% CPU utilization.

I now have a copper Zalman flower heatsink that does just
fine with a 600 rpm 120 mm fan blowing over it.
The noise of that fan is totally inaudible over the
noises created by other things in the system - like
the case fan, PSU fan, hard drives, etc.

At 100% my XP 2400+ only hits 55'C, so this combo should
be good enough for an XP 2800+ if the fan was sped up a
little bit. (Temps according to AsusProbe.)

I think I looked at one of those but wasn't compatible with my old motherboard. Too many
capacitors in the way to fit properly.
Bigger fan's can run slower and still cool as well.
My Silent boost has an 80mm at 2400rpm, my old Volcano7+ had an odd sized 72mm but ran at
6000rpm on full speed.
Damn annoying. Anyone wanna buy it. :-)
