I'm looking for a 7200 RPM 120 GB hard drive. Noise is my top concern.
What's the quietest hard drive out there in that size?

In terms of ATA 133 HDDs you cant go far wrong with a Samsung SpinPoint P
series drive such as SP1203N or SP1213N. I'm using the former in my All In
Wonder Equipped entertainment machine and its extremely quiet. Specs are
here:
http://www.samsung.com/Products/Har...HardDiskDrive_SpinPointPSeries_SP1203N_sp.htm

They also make SATA versions if thats your thing.

They come with a 3 year warranty (not the 1 year offering many other
companies provide). There's a review of them here
http://storagereview.com/articles/200401/20040112SP1614N_1.html which places
them about middle in terms of idle noise but seek noise (which is untested
here) is definitely where they excel.

New drives are much quieter than their ancestors. If comparing
to an older drive you would likely be satisfied with the
liquid-bearing models offered by Seagate, Hitachi, Maxtor,
Samsung, & Western Digital. That list is roughly quietest to
loudest, Seagate being quietest. Western Digital's older "JB"
series 120GB is by far the loudest.

Temp difference isn't as large, a cooling strategy with
sufficient margin for one make would suffice for another as well.

Want almost no sound? Get yourself a Seagate.

Its not the quietest anymore the Figitsu is, but not that much most
drives these days are quiet.

I learn my lesson, now I'm only using Seagate.
Very quite and reliable.

HELLO NURSE.
