I'm about to build a new workstation based on an ASUS SK8V and an Opteron
146. I want the system to be quiet. Does anyone have a recomendations for
fans that are both quiet and also do a decent job of cooling the CPU. How
noisy is the stock cooler? Power supply recommendations would alos be
appreciated, I'm leaning towards an Enermax 470W Noisetaker.

Might try the AMD 64bit newsgroup.

If it's not on your news server, ask them to add it.

I have an A64 3200, which should have the same stock cooler as the Opteron.
It is actually pretty good. It runs in the 3500 rpm range, not sure about
how many CFM it pushes. I can say that my system has fans which are more
noisy than the CPUs.

Besides if AMD gives it the "good enuff" stamp is should be alright.

I have asked them to add it, hopefully they'll do it.

If you're willing to look at a different motherboard take a look at
www.shuttle.com and view their XPC line. They have versions that
support Opteron and Athlon64 as well.

Now, the reason I'm recommending you look at them is that they have NO
fan on the CPU. They have a "Heat Pipe" cooling mechanism. This
method is literally SILENT! We have installed a few dozen of these
boxes as servers and desktops and they simply shine in all roles.

Good luck.

I see Athlon64 (socket 754) XPCs but no Opteron ones, am I missing
something or are their Opteron systems in another form factor?

I'm not the OP, but I thank you for the information.

Silent is very good. How long have you been running them? Do they run
24/7? How reliable have they been for you? Do they require maintenance?

Uh..
I think what they use is a series of heatpipes to move teh heat to a set of
fins at the back of the unit with a 120mm (not sure) fan connected to it..
the OP would also not have much room inside of a shuttle case, and generally
speaking it wouldnt be the ideal unit for a high end workstation..
If all he wants is the processor then I guess it'll be okay (I didnt know
they did opteron boards but I know they do a64 boards)

there is no "fully passive" cooling option being sold other than the zalman
case and it's both bulky and expensive.

Shuttle XPC's have fans, but they are nice and quiet. Still not quiet
enough for use as a musical instrument, but getting there.

(In a music studio, it needs to be way better than just "quiet").

I also have a box with a Zalman power supply and a Zalman fanblade cpu
cooler, and I'm really happy with these as well as the shuttle xpc.

Regarding our XPC's... we run several as production web servers 24/7.
They have been running non-stop since they took over from several AIX
boxen late last spring (2003). We've done zero maintenance on them
other than apply some RH patches.

We have also installed dozens of these as desktop units so they are
powered on and off each day. The users just love them.

Sorry about the mis-information about the Opteron. I believe I was
reading in CPU Magazine that shuttle did have a motherboard for the
FX51 which I think is an Opteron although I cannot be absolutely sure.

Bob

There is *technically* no difference between the Opteron 1xx series
(multiplier locked) and the Athlon64 FX-51 (multiplier variable). Both are
Socket 940 and both require ECC Registered DDR400 or better.
