Hi,
I need a system that makes hardly any noise, as it has to operate in a
professional quiet room. I have a laptop running 200 MHz: silent but
too slow. Ergonomics are poor. No need for mobility.
Are there desktops out there that would satisfy? I heard about open
brick project http://www.openbrick.org/, but processing speed 300 MHz
seems not enough. I need to run a windows application (windows 98SE)
on it.
Any sugestions?

The new Dells are extremely quiet.
I cannot hear any fan noise at all on our new 2.3ghz model.

Might try visiting www.mini-itx.com

This is a UK Site but it has a lot of info.

Also try looking at

http://www.idot.com/

The 500 Mhz boards can run with no CPU FAN and a 800 Mhz uses a very
low-noise fan. There are also models that are about 1,000 Mhz. Some
websites make computers that run off of a Flash IDE Drive instead of a hard
drive. If the operating system is on a flash drive there is no sound when
it boots up.

The website at

http://www.mini-box.com/

Has a selection on Mini-ITX solutions.

These places may have some links.

Might also look for the

http://www.viaarena.com/

Via is the one who made the specs for the Mini-ITX Form factor for these
17cm x 17cm motherboards.
