QuickTime made itself the default media player; how to change back to mplayer?

I installed the new QuickTime and now when I click on an mp3 file it
plays it with an imbedded QuickTime player. How can I change this back
to the old behavior... sending the file to Windows Media Player?

Set the preferences in Windows Media Player.

Luckily, I remembered your post. When you delete the previous reply, people
don't know what you're talking about.

Easy way to change this - right click on a .mp3 file, then Open with, then
Choose Program, select Windows Media Player from the list, make sure the
checkbox at the bottom is checked ("Always use....), click Okay. That will
reset your preferences.

Or, in WMP - click the down arrow upper right, then Tools...Options...File
Types tab. Check the box by MP3 audio file, click Apply, click Okay.

Finally, go to Start...Settings...Control Panel...QuickTime...File Types
tab. Make sure the MP3/MP3 audio box is unchecked and uncheck the box at
the bottom ("Notify me...", click Apply, click Okay.

Google Groups apparently doesn't quote. Anyway... I must not have been
entirely clear in my first post. I meant that QuickTime made itself the
default player in InetExplorer, not my desktop. When I click on, say, a
mp3 link in a webpage, an imbedded QuickTime control comes onto the
screen whereas before it would send the mp3 straight to mplayer. How do
I get this behavior back?

Start...Settings...Control Panel...QuickTime...Browser tab, MIME settings
button. Uncheck there.

You'd think that'd be it, but no, in my QuickTime MIME settings, mp3 is
not checked. Is there anywhere else I can look?

I'm having the same problem as Ron here. When you install Quicktime IE will
play .wav files through Quicktime. I spent 2 hours trying to adjust the file
type settings in WMP, QT, and Windows and that didn't affect what happens in
IE. I poked around the registry but nothing seemed useful and messing around
didn't help anything. I uninstalled QT just to have .wav open up in Sound
Recorder, which is just as bad.

Specifically what I want is when I click on a link that is a .wav file, like
on this webpage, http://www.nch.com.au/acm/formats.html , I want the .wav to
play in WMP. With QT installed it plays using a quicktime plugin and with it
uninstalled it opens up sound recorder. I am trying to get it to play in WMP
so it can buffer the .wav file so I can listen to it as it downloads, which
QT doesn't do and obviously not Sound Recorder. Is there a way to do this?

Open IE and click Tools>Internet Options>Programs
At bottom left, click on Manage Add-Ons.
Scroll down to WMP and be sure it's Enabled. If not, check the Radio
Box to Enable it under Settings. Also at the bottom right, you may have
to update the WMP add-on if it is NOT dimmed.
Simple solution and I hope this helps. If not, there are other ways.
Repost if necessary.

Maybe that's the problem here, there is no WMP in manage add-ons. I just
reinstalled WMP10 and it didn't appear in there, and browsing through
Microsoft's website hasn't turned up a seperate Active X control so far.
Could you give me the name of your add-on so I can try to see if I can
download it seperately?

Thanks,

Alex

Well, as it turns out, reinstalling WMP10 over itself actually did make it
the default player. I was too wrapped up with trying to get an ActiveX
control to appear in IE that I never actually tested playing the wav file. It
seems that when QT updates itself it takes prominince, and when you reinstall
WMP10 it then takes the lead. It's too bad there isn't a better way to
control this.

Thanks,

Alex
