Yesterday, I foolishly installed Quick Time Player to help with some
Celestia addons. I actually thought they'd gotten their act together
when they didn't nag me right after I'd installed it. It didn't nag
screen me until I tried to open it just now. I pressed the "later"
button, but I'm sure it'll nag me again tomorrow. Live and learn.
And the bad thing is that when you uninstall Apple Quick Time, it
leaves modules on your system so you can easily reinstall it if you
change your mind (not bloody likely).

So give them my address, register, and forget it.

If that is not acceptable, get "push the freakin button" and have it push
the "later" option whenever the popup appears.

The nag screen asks you to upgrade to the full version. However, your
second idea is a good one, provided they don't rotate the buttons. Thanks.

On the other hand, I think I'll wait and see how often it nags me. I
can always go to Quick Time Alternative too (even though removing
Quick Time Player is like extracting teeth.)

The standard ``trick'' for dealing w/ QuickTime's registration request (over on
the Mac side of the house) is to set one's clock forward by one year, then run
the player and check ``Later'' quit, reset one's clock then one won't be
bothered for a year.

William,
Heh. Sounds good, but why not advance one's clock by several years?
Seems like that would work better. Also, I wanted to ask do you have
any idea how often the nag screen appears normally? TIA.

It's my (uncertain organic) memory that QuickTime is set to nag one once a year
--- IME, they usually do a new version more frequently than that so no huhu.

William,
Well, so far so good. I've only gotten that one nag screen. Guess
it's not a big deal because the only use I have for the program is to
view movies that are part of this set of Celestia
(http://www.shatters.net/celestia/) addons:

I just tried installing it. Doesn't work. Last thing in installation
is "Configure settings" or somesuch. When you try to do it, the
configuration program file is missing. Then, when I tried double
clicking on a .mov file, it told me that without Quicktime, it
couldn't run the movie.

Maybe it's just my system, but for me this Quicktime Alternative
release is a total failure.

(P.S. I had just uninstalled Quicktime Player and then rebooted.)

(P.S. I had just uninstalled Quicktime Player and then rebooted.)

Specifically, here is the error message I got when I tried to
configure the program:
_____________________________
Unable to execute file:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\control.exe
CreateProcess failed; code 2.
The system cannot find the file specified
_____________________________

Then when I double clicked on an existing .mov file, I got this:
_____________________________
Windows cannot find QuickTimePlayer.exe.
This program is needed for opening files of type 'QuickTime Movie'.
Location of QuickTimePlayer.exe:
_____________________________

It appears to me that this release of Quicktime Alternative is not yet
ready for use.

The screen that failed is used to configure the player - which
you aren't using! It has to be there because it is additionally
linked to the codecs and dlls which are used by Media Player
Classic.

The questions become, "can you stream QT media"; "do your
browsers resolve QT-assigned content on web pages."

Works (more or less) for me :-)

The error message resulted because the program is configured to find
control.exe in the system folder, when on my system it's located in
the windows folder. I clicked on the "Quick Time Settings" shortcut
that Quicktime Alternative installed in my start menu, and it couldn't
find that executable. When I browsed to the correct location in the
Windows folder, the control panel module opened correctly from that
point on. However, file associations doesn' work. Guess one would have
to do that in Media Player Classic. Not a problem. However, Pan and
Scan doesn't work so Quicktime Alternative is useless to me and I'm
going to uninstall it.

Another thing I noticed was that when use the uninstall shortcut
that Quicktime Alternative adds to your start menu, it not only
uninstalls the program but it deletes the 6 mb installation file as well!

Back to that POS Qucktime Player for me I'm afraid. They want $30 to
get rid of the nag screen and to enable full screen mode. Possibly a
new category: gypware.

That's a shame. IIWY, I'd try one last time - after cleaning out every
relic of QT and QTA from my registry, and files.

Sometimes the uninstall features of these things get the main executable,
but leave stuff in the registry that is NOT overridden by subsequent
installations.
This could result in pointers pointing to the wrong area. (I had similar
problems with Real and Real Alt).

Have you tried Irfanview with the Quicktime plugin? It works fine with
Quicktime Alternative for playing mov, I've never had to try Pan& Scan.

For some reason, it quit working. Maybe the files I was trying to play
were of a more recent format that IrfanViews codecs couldn't handle.

It's no biggie. Tomorrow, I'm going to try the trick William F. Adams
described in this thread.

Well, that couldt be a message... At any rate, I could get neither
QTA nor RA to start. Different error message than you received and maybe
solveable but who cares?

And actually, I was in error. The installation file didn't get
removed: I forgot that I'd done that myself.
