In past versions of Excel I've used, most recently 2000, I could press F1,
go to Index, then type in the first few letters of a function name, and then
select the function and read the online help for it.

Is this possible within Excel 2003? All that comes up when I press F1 is a
search interface, which I can type a function name, and it will eventually
come up. Is there a faster way to get to the online help for particular
functions?

If you hit the dropdown arrow on the sigma (Sum icon) sign, then choose 'More
functions' you can search through all of them, or just type the first letter to
jump to that section, and you will also see a 'Help on this function' link
bottom left on the dialog box.

Hi Dave!

Ken's reply is the one fast approach.

Help > Microsoft Excel Help > Table of Contents > Working with Data >
Function Reference

Or you can always get Function Lists (see below) which gives names >
classifications > descriptions > syntax and rapid access to Help.
