I've got a monster of a project that includes just tons of external files
that have been named with paragraphs of names! These do not necessarily
work well with Powerpoint and a variety of computers. I need to tidy this
thing up. Know of any utilities that could help? TIA

Do you know VB6 programming?

It'd be fairly simple to
- Identify a folder
- Change every JPG file name in the folder to File001.jpg, File002.jpg,
File003.jpg, etc.
- Create an output text file showing the new and old file names.

Of course, I'd recommend doing this to a copy of the folder and using the
utility before any PowerPoint links are created.

I am downloading it right now. Many thanks!

I've used something in the past called "Batch File Rename" 2.4.14
http://www.parkenet.com/apl/BatchFileRename.htm

I'm pretty sure it had a "limit 8.3" setting (plus a zillion other options)

I've tried out a few renamers!

You basically give it a directory and it will batch rename using your
settings.
It's great for renaming digital camera pictures
