I am a proud newbie owner of a Windows 2000 server. I had
no Idea what I was getting myself into, not realizing
that personal firewalls don't work on Server OS.

Now to make me feel even dumber, I have researched with
no avail for quite some time to find a cheap firewall
solution for my sever. one that does not involve having
to get all complicated with a second computer, hardware
firewall, etc... my needs are small in comparison to
those requirements.

Is there a commonly known "server" version of a software
firewall that anyone knows of? As it stands, I've got
antivirus, but what good is that if I'm wide open the the
rest of the world?

If no answer is possible because of 3rd party software
issues, where do I open and close ports with windows 2000?

Thanks,

Colin

Personal software does work on Server version - at least I know that Kerio
and Sygate do. However I think you would be well served with a hardware
firewall. Netgear makes one for around $80 that is a true SPI firewall NAT
device that may be fine for your situation - read the online manual before
purchasing any device. Of course the Netscreen and Sonic Wall firewalls are
much more flexable as far as creating rules and the number of rules with
faster processors and more memory, but now you are talking at least $400.
Once you set up a hardware firewall, you have a pretty reliable device that
normally does not need much attention in a small network. I have seen
various personal firewalls suddenly quit working or the rules even change
without any apparent reason. They however are much more flexable in managing
outbound traffic even mapping rules to m5 hash proected applications. But I
think they certainly have their place in conjunction with a hardware device
in the more than usual home situation. --- Steve

I sure hope you're not referring to Kerio when you talk about
rules changing without apparent reason...
