Quick Launch?

The area on the bottom right of the screen - next to the time display (I
think in Win 98 they called it the System Tray) - is this now called the
Quick Launch Bar?

I have a lot of un-necessary icons there - I tried to remove them from the
Start Up menu via msconfig - but unlike Win 98, it appears XP does NOT like
'Selective Startup' - only 'Normal' startup Other methods I have tries to
edit these icons have not worked after reboots. Suggestions?

Also, could someone tell me what are the 3 or 4 basic items (like Win 98)
that are required by XP for basic startup and the only ones that MUST be in
there?

Thanks Will -
I want to get rid of selected icons from the Notification Bar. Then I want
to add selected desktop icons to the Quick Launch bar so I can start
programs with one click without clearing my screen to get to desktop icons..
In Win 98 I just dragged and dropped the desktop icons to the "Quick Launch
Bar". Now when I drag and drop they dont stick.

And ....any comments on the second part of my question?

Hi

That is the 'Notification Area' - the Quick Launch Bar is on the left.
Which one do you want to get rid of icons from?

Hi

You can 'drag and drop' from Windows Explorer on the Quick Launch Bar. The icons on the Notification Area can be eradicated either by an option in the appropriate program or by unchecking them in msconfig>startup.

I'm not too sure what to say about the startup items - I can boot my PC with all of the items disabled without any problems. The ones that I normally have in there are my firewall, AV program and Mailwasher.

Thank you for your kind responses. Unfortunately, like other previous
responses, it did not work. The icons would not 'stick'. Strangely, no one
in all the varied responses on this list and other lists mentioned the
keyword - "Links". I stumbled on this myself. You must activate 'Links'
in the Toolbar menu. The links area will accept and hold the icons and
allow 'one click' loading of their respective programs. I hope this is
accurate and
that you find this valuable for future inqueries.
