Quick Launch Toolbar

I always put the icons for the various programs I use at the bottom of my
desktop, in what I think is called, the system tray. All of a sudden a
double-row has appeared there robbing me of valuable screen real estate. Can
some tell me how to make that double-row a single row again? Thanks a bunch!

right-click bar to un-lock...
position cursor at top edge of bar
press mouse button down and drag top edge DOWN
right-click bar to LOCK

Let's be certain about the terminology here: The system tray (official name:
system notification area) is on the right hand side of the taskbar and
typically includes the time. The Quick Launch toolbar typically appears on
the left hand side of the taskbar, next to the Start button. You can
manually place icons (shortcuts, actually) into the Quick Launch toolbar,
but only software puts icons into the tray.

If the taskbar has become wider - and you didn't choose this, which you
can - then one of two things might have happened. You might have unwittingly
dragged the border of one of your toolbars, making it too long to fit on a
one-line taskbar. Or you may have unwittingly changed the size of your
taskbar icons so that they're too large to fit into the space you have
allocated for a toolbar.

Try this first: Look for the borders of your Quick Launch toolbar and drag
them back to their original length.

Speaking of the Quicklaunch toolbar, how does one 'lock' in the positions of certain shortcuts there? There is a personal preference I choose that keeps getting moved after every re-boot.

I have the same problem from yesterday. I think it
happens after installing MS windows recommended updates.
Please let me know how to solve it.

Thanks.

Tom,

Thanks for your answer and the terminology. It is the Quick Launch toolbar
I'm referring to here. All the icons remained the same size as before
(small) and all will easily fit on one row. Only blank space is under the
top row but if I try to drag the toolbar down, the Quick Launch toolbar will
disappear under the screen. I can drag the QL toolbar up to increase its
size to about 1/2 of the total screen.

If I grab a border from either of the two rows by putting the cursor over
the border, see it change to a two-headed arrow, and try to pull it to the
right, it remains rigid.

Right now, all I seem to be able to do is grab the top and drag down which
will give me either two rows (icons on top row, bottom row empty) or no rows
(QL disappears under the screen) or drag up to as much as 1/2 of the screen.

I really do need every inch of my 17" monitor and welcome any and all
suggestions.

i got "all" the updates and icons in area next to "start
button" do not move and stay as customized. only show 4
icons (i.e. - calendar - o.e. - c.panel) and have popup
menu for additional quick launch items.
my q.l. menu includes:
money2003
notepad
wordpad
works word
disk cleanup
defrag
media player
spybot
printer
thrillride pinball
calculator

Sometimes I forget the obvious: Right-click on your taskbar and remove the
checkmark from 'Lock the Taskbar'.

Don't confuse the Quick Launch toolbar with the taskbar. (And thanks to the
powers-that-be for giving them similar sounding names.) The former
ordinarily resides on the latter (although it can be undocked - don't ask.)
