After I rearrange the quick launch icons in the Quick Launch toolbar and log
off, they go back to what they were before the next time I log on. What
causes this and how can I make my changes permanent? I'm running Win2k Pro
SP4. A search of the MS KB yields no information
about how to fix this.

Hello. I have looked at the MS Knoweledge Base, but find no discussion of this particular issue. Perhasp you can try clicking on the items to open them and they will be "promoted" on the toolbar-as is the case in MS Word, so that they will stay put.

It's just an idea. Post back if you find the answer. I'd be interestsed in learning more!

I fooled around with my quick-launch toolbar... closed it then re-opened it...
....and discovered that the Icons were arranged automatically by Name.
....as I suspect is the case on your system... ???

First, try closing the toolbar... rebooting... and then re-opening it... rearrange it a bit and reboot again... Does it remember your changes?

If that doesn't work, then try this
..... and This is just a hunch ... (as I've never had this problem (before.... until now :) ).

If
1) Your explorer "Folder Options" are set to use the same "view" for all folders, and
2) you use "Icon view" and
3) you have "Auto Arrange" option set,

then
1) change your folder options to "Remember each folder's view settings"

To do this, open windows explorer, select: Tools>Folder Options>View (tab) and scroll down the list to activate the "Remember each folder's..." check-box option.
Click on {Apply} and then {OK}

2) Next, open your "Quick Launch" folder, located in the following directory:
C:\Documents and Settings\ (folder for your user name) \Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch
(Alternatively, you can right click on an empty spot on the Quick-Launch toolbar and select: "Open Folder")

3) Right click on an empty space within the folder and select: Arrange Icons...
....if you see a "check-mark" next to "Auto Arrange", then clear the check-mark.
....If the view is Icons... change it to "Details"... (probably not necessary... but do it anyway)
Close the folder.

4) Rearrange a few Icons on your Quick-Launch bar and restart the computer... and keep your fingers crossed :)

Like I said, It's only a hunch... but seems worth trying...

Let me know if it works or not... I'm very curious...

Several days ago I posted a question regarding how to set the "files=" value so I can run an older DOS based program that I've used for a long time on several of my computers. I actually have used it on my laptop running 2000 Pro, but I've forgotten how I set the handles or "files=" value which must be set higher than 99 for the program to run. I got an answer to my question from a subscriber to this newsgroup, but I don't know where to begin to implement it. How do I find the file to modify? Is it in the registry? Where? Here is the reply I got...can anyone help me with more detail? Thanks.

"Modify %SystemRoot%\system32\config.nt to add the files= statement. config.nt configured the command.com environment, not cmd.exe, so use that to launch your app after you've made the change.

I tried what you suggested but it didn't work (items revert to By Name
order). This is probably because once a Sort Order is set via clicking on
the Folder (the one that contains the Quick Launch Toolbar) Column Headers
in View/Details mode, it seems impossible to go back to a "Sort By Nothing"
state (you always have to sort by one of the columns, either Ascending or
Descending).

My kludge of a work-around: rename the items with prefixes like aaShow
Desktop, abInternet Explorer, etc., to force them to Sort By Name in the
order I want them to appear horizontally on the Toolbar.

Unless there is some "set the Sort Order to Null" Registry hack that I've
never heard of, this rather sorry excuse for a work-around seems to be my
only solution.

I opened up the folder that contains the Quck Lauch Toolbar in View/Details
mode and noticed it has a Sort Order of By Name indicator in the Name column
header. That seems to explain why it always reverts to By Name sort oder
after I log off no matter how much drag-and-drop rearranging I do. Once you
ever start sorting, it seems impossible to go back to a "Sort By Nothing"
state (you always have to sort by one of the displayed columns, either

Is "Autoarrange" checked?
