Greetings !

(a)
"All of a sudden", my "Quick Launch" taskbar(?) has disappeared.

When I right-click on the "Start" button, and choose "Properties", then
"Taskbar", I am offered a button to click for "Show Quick Launch".

If I left-click on that, a tick appears in the box, and when I click "OK",
......

.....nothing happens for about FIFTY seconds, then that window disappears -
but no Quick Launch - and if I repeat the process, when it comes up the box
is now un-ticked !

(b)
When I click on the "Start" button, the left hand panel is blacked out.

Are these two both part of the same challenge ?

Earlier this week, for a couple of days, when I fired up Internet Explorer,
the toolbars were blacked out (the drop-down menus were OK), but this seems
to have cured itself. Also part of the challenge ?

Help !

Right-click the Taskbar, hover over "Toolbars", click "Quick Launch" to
add that toolbar.

Here are a few ideas I found with a Google search, and elswwhere.

This might help

Line 117. Restore Taskbar and Start Menu

This link suggests that a Logitech Webcam install can cause the problem.

Several dialog boxes are blank:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/831430

Right-click a blank area of the Desktop, select Properties, Settings,
Advanced and go to the Troubleshoot tab. Move the slider for Hardware
acceleration down a notch or two.

"I've seen a similar effect to this when enforcing color schemes via
system policy. If you force users to use the windows default color
scheme, for some reason the Vertical Title on the Start Menu goes black,
and the current highlighted start-menu item goes black. To stop it I
stopped enforcing a color scheme via system policy."

This will re-register some .dll files and could fix the display, I guess.

Click Start, Run, and type each line below. You can copy/paste each one
to save a little typing:

regsvr32 SHMEDIA.DLL (Press Enter key)
regsvr32 ole32.dll (Press Enter key)
regsvr32 /i shell32.dll (Press Enter key)
regsvr32 /i shimgvw.dll (Press Enter key)
regsvr32 /i mshtml.dll (Press Enter key)
regsvr32 mshtml.dll (Press Enter key)
regsvr32 shdocvw.dll (Press Enter key)

, for which, many thanks :

Now it hangs around for EIGHTY seconds...
Right-click the Taskbar, hover over "Toolbars", click "Quick Launch" to
add that toolbar.

Erm.... which "Taskbar" is that ?

"System policy"... ? What's that ?

Heigh-ho. Sorry, no cigar.

But thank you for trying.

Erm.... which "Taskbar" is that?

There's only one Taskbar. It's the area between the Start button and
the Notification (Tray) area.
No difference

I don't have a webcam.

There are other software packages that can mess up the Start Menu. Do
you remember what was installed just before this first occurred?

No difference
