Are Prescott coolers backwards compatible with Norwood P4's ? (ie. will they
physically fit ?)

I figure if it's designed for the hotter running Prescott, I can run it on the
lowest setting for my humble 2.4Ghz Northwood.. (stock cooler sounds like a
vacuum cleaner!)

Regards,
Chris

Some are - if you're looking for a quiet HSF and are in the UK "Custom PC"
magazine just reviewed 22 of them, some of them received excellent results
for low noise too. Companies such as Quiet PC (www.quietpc.com) specialise
in providing very quiet PC components.

I'm in Canada, so anything availble here or in the states is fine.. just after
something quiet that looks good.. I like the Thermaltake Volcano 11+

Take heatsink off and examine the bottom. Remove the
original TIM material and if it's not silky smooth (need not
be mirror shiney) then lap it. Reinstall with decent thin
layer of thermal paste. Optimizing the CPU / 'sink
interface is very useful for allowing lower airflow to
achieve acceptible results.

With cooler performing at optimal levels, use one of myriad
options to reduce fan RPM. Shoot for sub-2400 RPM for low
noise, even lower for near/silent.

Correction to my previous post, I'm looking at the Spark 7+ (not the Volcano
11+, which is the same design except for athlon)..
