quick boot?

I am sitting for 4 or 5 minutes while my system boots. There is a black
screen, then the window's progress bar (RAM check?) and then the desktop
shows with no icons. Then the screen blinks TWICE to black and finally I see
my icons. But the computer is not ready to use yet.

I used to go into the msconfig and tweak the startup stuff but I cannot do
that in Vista. I am TOO afraid I am going to mess it all up.

I read an article on Quick boot, but cannot find it in the setup (F2) or the
boot device selection (F12) on this computer. Any ideas?

I have a Toshiba A135-S4487 Laptop that was bought new in Feb 07 with Vista
Home Premium. Love it but takes SO much time to start working.

Thanks!!
Debbie

Hi Debbie,

This tutorial will show you how to do a quick restart by explorer.exe
or logoff and logon.

HI Shawn -

While this tutorial taught me something new and useful, and I thank you for
that - it did not really answer my question.

I am looking for a list of changes, or a change, in the BOOT process - a
cold boot if you will - so that the computer ready to use quicker! I have
looked in the F2 and F12 bios options, and cannot find what I was told is a
"Quick boot" feature. This supposedly eliminates the RAM check (remember the
old DOS RAM check? You could see it on the screen as it went through all the
RAM?) and other slow boot processes.

Thanks again for your response!

Debbie

What you are refering to is called silent boot in my bios under boot
options on an intel board desktop.

Thanks "Carl G" I will look into it.

Carl -

i have a "quiet boot" in the boot area of the bios. It is enabled. I do not
have a silent boot or a quick boot anywhere - F2 of F12 - to get into the
bios.

Any other ideas?

Thanks again!

Thanks, brink! I did the 30 to 5 second to operating system change already. I
am looking for insight, now, into unchecking things in the msconfig startup.
I am just nervous and don't want to uncheck something that i really need but
don't know it!

Thanks -
