Questions re: cd rom drivers, installation, detection etc.

I have installed smartdrive.exe, diskmanager, dynamic drive overlay
etc. to either the hard drive or the boot disks.

1.the cd-rom is installed on the secondary IDE slot,
set to slave, the computer is detecting at as secondary
slave drive. Should it be the primary
slave drive to be accessed as drive D?

2. though I have installed an Oak Technologies generic/universal
cd=rom driver, AND tried using a win98 boot disk, I still cannot
get to D: prompt from the DOS prompt (A/:>)
I get the message: invalid drive specification
I can only go to C: drive from A:
No matter what I try it won't access drive D.

3. My bios is listing the size of the C: drive as 2 billion bytes,
and it is supposed to be a ten gigabyte hard drive.

I am still trying to install WINXP from a cd.

FAT16?

I am still trying to install WINXP from a cd.

I am still doubting if you will ever get it installed. Go buy a legitimate XP
CD and boot on it. I will put money that your downloaded XP image will not
work anyway.

What else is on the first IDE channel? Sounds like you need a BIOS update
as well for the mobo to make sure that the drive size gets reported
properly. What kind of issues are you having installing?

Andrew,

You will get better response to your postings if you:
a) do not cross post.
b) respond back with your progress on the same thread rather than starting a
new one each time.

There are many knowledgable people that will take their time to make careful
consideration of your issue and give well thought out answers - if a
respondant is off track, another will correct them.

If you cross post as you have done you are not likely to get the best
answers and resolve your issues - you invite bad answers.

In answer to your plight, I suggest you make a new posting in this news
group only, stating the following:

Your hardware configuration - in detail - with bios version number. If you
don't know your bios version number, look in your motherboard manual to
found out how to locate it.

A concise definition of what the problem is and what you are trying to
achieve.

If something has failed, what the last change was that you made to the
system (if any) prior to it failing.

If this is a legitimate XP CD, why have you not tried booting from the CD in
order to install:
Assuming your system is set to boot from the CD-ROM drive, boot with the XP
CD in the drive. If it isn't or you are not sure, you need to enter the
system's BIOS. When you boot the system, the first screen usually has
instructions that if you wish to enter setup press a specific key, when you
see that, do so. Then you will have to navigate to the boot sequence, if
the CD-ROM drive is not first line, set it first in the boot sequence. Save
your settings and exit with the XP CD in the drive. The system will reboot.

A few screens into the boot process, if you see the message on the boot
screen to "Press any key in order to boot from the CD," do so.

After loading drivers and files, you should be taken to a screen with
the following:

To Setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.
To Repair a Windows XP Installation using Recovery Console press R.
To Quit setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

In your case, press ENTER.

Agree to the License agreement by pressing F8.

You will then be taken to a screen with two options.

To repair the selected Windows XP installation press R.
To continue installing a fresh copy of Windows XP without repairing,
press ESC.

This will bring you to a partition map where you
can delete, create and format partitions.
Select the drive you wish to format, delete the partition, then create a new
partition, format as desired and continue with XP installation.

He already admitted it was a download in a previous thread of his.

Thanks, "relic," I didn't see the previous thread though, given the way he
was attempting to put a round peg in a square hole, I should have
guessed.:-)

Some systems have trouble accessing a drive if it is set to be the slave
drive on a controller that has no master. Jumper the drive as master
and see if this fixes the problem
