Questions On Simultaneous Save

Using this site, I created an icon to save to two locations, and I
also modified my "Save As" icon. I now have three questions:

1. The size of my normal.dot file increased after creating these
icons, plus endless trial and error, from 29Kb to 41 Kb. That
seems like a lot. Should I let it be, or should I assume there's
corruption in there and start again from scratch?

2. How can I create new menu entries? I would like to put the
simultaneous save on the File menu.

3. In his web site, Graham Mayor "strongly" suggests or
recommends that users create a personal toolbar to contain new
icons like his simultaneous save icon. Why? Why not just add
them to the standard toolbar?

Thanks.

Jose,

Graham may be onboard later to correct any false assumptions I may make.

I wouldn't worry about the Normal .dot file size. You have the button
changes that you mentioned plus the macro code. My Normal.dot file was 100K
last time I check.

The following should address your question about assigning to a menu:

I am guessing here, but I believe Graham advocates creatin your own toolbar
or menu group to preserve your ability to "reset" the default menu's and
toolbars that ship with Word. I have modified plenty of mine without
problems. However, I backup my Normal.dot regularily as protection against
corruption.

Thanks Greg. Where, and under what name, does Wd store custom
toolbar info? In other words, if I created a custom toolbar and
some time later normal.dot was trashed, where would the program
look for custom toolbars after I restored normal.dot? The reason
I'm asking is, if I do create a personal toolbar, I want to be
sure the config data is included in my backup set.

Custom toolbars are, by default, stored in Normal.dot along with the
customized ones. But you can create a separate template for the toolbar and
load it as an add-in (save it to Word's Startup folder).

Suzanne, would there be a performance consequence to doing that,
i.e., having the toolbar part of a separate document that is
loaded from the startup folder? Another way of asking this is,
Does the size, complexity, or number of templates that are loaded
from the startup folder either degrade performance or increase the
risk of corruption?

Backtracking a bit, I recommended a separate toolbar for personalisations
because it is easier to control what is displayed in the toolbar area. You
can thus pop up toolbars for tasks in much the same way that Word uses pop
up toolbars for tasks. Toolbars are stored in templates and documents.

Inevitably the more templates you load the longer it will take to load them,
but once you have them running you will not notice any performance hit. In
the overall scheme of things an extra couple of seconds to start Word is
inconsequential.

I have six add-in templates loading from two locations and my normal.dot
file suddenly stands at approximately 2 mb. Obviously I have backups but
corruption of the templates is extremely rare. There are far more things to
worry about than this :)
