My cousin's been having frequent problems with her computer freezing
randomly and the sound, keyboard, mouse not working all of a sudden,
forcing her to reboot. So, I decided to so a clean reinstall of XP
Pro for her, which she already has on it. I already scanned it for
viri and it's clean.

Is there anything I should know about, some "gotchas" or special
notice to take when doing a clean reinstall? Does this MB have an
onboard soundchip and if so, how can I enable it properly? Did she
make a mistake by going with VIA chipset? I think I read somewhere
that VIA based MB's are very unstable and prone to problems. Below is
a list of the components in the computer.

As well, does anyone know what the fastest proc this MB can support,
but only with a BIOS update if needed; not oc'ing though.

She says that the freezes, the sudden loss of use of the
mouse/keyboard/sound seems random. She can't pin point a single app
she has open or something particular of note when these things happen.
TIA!

Suggestion if you're brave. Grab http://www.knoppix.org/ and make a
bootable CD. Boot it (it doesn't use HDD) and use Linux. See if you
still get the same problems in Windows XP. If you do have problems, then
it sounds like hardware problems. That's a good way to check.

Hmmm, that's a very interesting suggestion. Been meaning to check out
Knoppix for a while anyway. I'll keep it in mind. Thanks.

There is an undocumented jumper setting for the ram voltage. The
default setting is too high. Pull the jumpers off jp 1 and 2 on one
end of the agp slot and see if that does it. It worked for me.
