I have a user with an installation of Windows 2000, Office 2000 with all the
latest service packs.
Opening Excel first and then opening a .XLS file works as designed.
Opening anything else, either from a shortcut or the actual file ends up
with not only that file open but a 'Book1' file open as well.
Also being opened this way if any change is made to the original file and an
attempt to Exit (not just close the file) is made...it asks the usual "Do
you want to save changes" message...but then it does not close the file.
Both 'Book1' and the original file remain open.
Attempting to close just the one file works as designed.

Any suggestions are GREATLY appreciated.

(but VERY confused over this one!!)

Take a look in your XLStart folder (use windows start button|find/search to
locate it).

What files do you have in there?

I keep book.xlt, sheet.xlt (templates for new workbooks & worksheets) and
personal.xla (a bunch of generic macros).

I'm guessing that you have another workbook in there that's opening when you
start excel.

I've seen similar posts before, but could not drudge up one quickly.
seem to remember most of the solutions that worked involvin
unregistering and registering excel.

From Start Button, select run.

Type in the Open box: Excel /unregserver

Then repeat, typing: Excel /regserver

This makes excel reregister itself. I've done this myself with no il
effects.

If the /unregserver & /reregserver doesn't help, make sure you looked in all
your XLStart folders. There can be more than one--depending on how you upgraded
excel.

I'd use Windows start button|find to search for all of them.
